New NASA Administrator? January 14, 2009

Posted by skywalking1 in Space.

Reports today are that the Obama administration will announce retired Air Force general Scott Gration as the new head of NASA, replacing Mike Griffin. Gration is a former fighter pilot and has served extensively in staff assignments and in the Mideast. A link to his bio is here. He has limited space experience.

Gration will have a steep learning curve. Other NASA administrators have had little or no space experience, but the new man will be coming in with NASA facing some of the most difficult challenges in its history. His biggest asset will be a rapport with the new President.

My next column in Aerospace America (current piece here) will include a list of recommendations for the new NASA boss, whether it’s Gration or a different nominee.
